Since the beginning of mission conferences back in 1990, we’ve supported well over 180 organizations in more than 50 countries with funding of over $1,500,000 – including over 100 organizations throughout Georgia, with the majority being from Dawson and Pickens Counties.

The 31st Broyles Mission Celebration gives us all the opportunity to celebrate our Chapel’s outreach and experience the work, goals, and accomplishments of supported organizations.

The Conference is self-funded and all proceeds are distributed to the presenting organizations. No Chapel funds are used.

Spotlight Organization: Hospital Art

Touching Lives with the Stroke of a Brush

The widely popular, PaintFest, is an annual event that brings families and friends together for a fun-filled time. No artistic experience is necessary. It is painting by color! Everything is provided: pre-drawn panels, paint, brushes, markers, aprons, and instructions. The completed art is then donated to a deserving hospital or care facility.

Established in 1984, the Foundation for Hospital Art is a non-profit entity dedicated to involving volunteers and patients throughout the world to create colorful, soothing artwork that when donated, helps soften the often-dreadful hospital experience. To date over 1,000,000 participants have created more than 50,000 paintings, in over 7,500 hospitals and nursing homes in 195 countries. “But we are not done,” explains John Feight, Founder of the Foundation for Hospital Art, and resident of Big Canoe. “Our quest is to donate at least one painting to every hospital on earth.”

Big Canoe Chapel is a PaintFest sponsor. The event is open to the entire Big Canoe community. This year’s event is scheduled the weekend of May 15 at the Wildcat Pavilion, from 9:00 till noon. Bezathreads

Beza means “Redemption” in the Ethiopian language of Amharic and Redemption and freedom is what is offered to children sold into slavery. Through compassion and love, Beza Threads help overcome the greatest pains and scars of child slavery. The Pregnancy Center

The Pregnancy Center ministers to women who are facing an unplanned pregnancy or post-abortion trauma in an effort to provide hope and healing to the whole family. They offer free and confidential pregnancy testing, referrals for free ultrasounds, counseling, education and everyday essentials to those they serve. The Pregnancy Center serves multiple counties across the North Georgia including Pickens, Cherokee, and Gilmer.

Conference History

The Broyles World Mission Conference was Dr. Vernon S. Broyles’ idea and his passion. Dr. Broyles, our first Chaplain, often said that he had never seen a church grow and prosper that was not mission oriented. Although the Chapel had a strong benevolence outreach, Dr. Broyles felt that this outreach could be made stronger if the entire congregation had a opportunity to hear about some of the organizations and causes being supported by the Chapel. He proposed an annual world mission conference featuring speakers who would be the leaders of these groups, organizations or institutions. He reasoned that this would be a great opportunity for people to ask questions and learn in a more informal social setting.

The first World Mission Conference was held April 19-21, 1991 and 31 years later is still a vital part of the Chapel. From the first conference on, a PaintFest directed by the Foundation for Hospital Art has been a popular feature of our conferences. (After Dr. Broyles death, the annual event became known as the Broyles World Mission Conference.)
